JRR Tolkien Lord of the Rings - Hobbit - The Return of the King Description: "Directed by Ralph Bakshi (best known for his X-rated cartoon 'Fritz the Cat'), this 1978 effort is a grandly ambitious animated attempt to bring to the screen J.R.R. Tolkein's classic fantasy trilogy. Well, half of it, at least. It seems that Bakshi ran out of money about halfway through the tale, so the film ends rather abruptly and without so much as a 'To Be Continued.' As it is, the film begins the story of Middle Earth's War of the Rings, introducing us to the hobbit Frodo, the heroic ranger Aragorn and the great wizard Gandalf. They unite (along with quite a few others) in a quest to destroy the all-powerful One Ring, a magical totem that could give unlimited power to any who possess it. They must succeed in their goal or risk the Ring falling into the hands of the imminently evil dark lord Sauron.
